Since 1999, Local 354 has provided an apprenticeship program for applicants who are seriously interested in the stagecraft trade. The program combines classroom and on-the-job training with mentoring by experienced journeymen. In addition, apprentices are also encouraged to take advantage of "dark days" in some of our venues, where they can work in a quiet setting to master the operation of various lighting and sound consoles as well as other items of stage equipment. However, apprentices must bear in mind that should they intend to pursue these latter objectives, there will be no financial incentive provided. Briefly stated, some practices must be learned on one's own time!

Any person applying for membership in this local must be of good moral character and reputation and unless waived by the International for proper cause upon application by the local, must have been a resident for at least eighteen (18) months preceding the application within this jurisdiction.

Applications to the program are accepted biannually from May 1st to May 31st and November 1st to November 30th of each calendar year. Applications are accepted and provide equal opportunity for training without discrimination because of age, sex, race, color, religion or national origin. To be eligible for the program, an applicant must:

  • Have a minimum of 700 cumulative hours as a permit worker on the Local 354 dispatch list. Hours from related (non-represented) work may be allowed for eligibility to the program, subject to review by the apprentice committee.
  • Have all percentages and fines paid (Be in good standing).
  • Have been a resident within Local 354's jurisdiction for at least 18 months.
  • Have completed and submitted an application package, including resume.

The maximum number of apprentices accepted annually shall be limited to no more than six (6) individuals. All applications will be reviewed by Local 354's Apprentice Committee and final acceptance will be contingent upon this review.
